Seiko Chronograph and Dive Watches
The Seiko "Monster" dive watch is one of my personal favourites. It
has that kind of look that people either love or hate but there's no denying
that it's built for rugged functionality. The dive watches have an automatic
mechanical movement and features like a threaded crown, screw-down solid case
back and high visibility faces. The Seiko chronograph pictured below has a
quartz movement and a wide range of functional features.
Seiko Criteria Chronograph/Alarm/Slide-rule Bezel Watch
I have to admit
right up front that I like this watch more than the Citizen Eco-drive Skyhawks.
It's safe to say that I like the Eco-drive movement, but I have a
"thing" about digital functions on a chronograph. Given a choice, I
will take analog displays every time. Then again, I'm an anachronistic weirdo
and freely admit that the preferences of other are as valid (if not more so)
as mine. This watch has alarm and chronograph functions as well as a protected slide-rule
bezel. Tale a close look at the face and you will see another crown on
the left side that turns the inner bezel ring under the
crystal.
Movement: Japanese quartz multi-function chrono/alarm
Case and Dial: Solid stainless steel, 45mm wide with both crowns,
38.5mm wide without the crowns, screw down stainless steel case back, analog displays,
multi-function slide-rule bezel, blue face

SEIKO DIVE WATCHES
In my opinion, Seiko makes some of the best value-priced "real"
dive watches available today. While there are MANY watches with that diver look,
most of them aren't a good choice for real underwater functionality. Watches
like Invictas look great, are made from good components, and are fine for occasional
use in water. Elements like exhibition case-backs and smaller faces limit their
"real" use as dive watches. I have one complaint about the Seikos -
the mechanical movement is automatic-only and can't be manually wound. I
understand the logic in this: every time one unscrews the crown to wind or set a
watch, the risk of letting in moisture or other contaminates exists. Also, the
act of winding, if not done carefully, can result in a less-than perfect
stem/crown/case alignment and that also impacts water resistance. There, that's
my one issue. For a "real" dive watch and a great value, look no
further.
Movement: Seiko self-winding mechanical
movement cal. 7S26 (except model SKX173) Case and Dial: Solid stainless steel, 43 - 45mm wide with asymmetric
screw-down crown, screw down stainless steel case back, day and date
displays, count-down bezel, large, luminous markers and hands.
